I am a big fan of tie-down straps. I use them a lot. I prefer cam straps from the Rollercam brand, but I have also used ratchet straps and winch straps. I was thinking about this the other day when I began wondering how other people use tie-downs. I figure there must be some applications I never thought of before. So I did a little research.
Lo and behold, my suspicions were correct. There are plenty of uses for tie-down straps I had never considered. Describing them all would be a gargantuan task. So instead, I have compiled a list of the most common applications divided into two categories: commercial and noncommercial.
1. Commercial Applications
The one commercial application that tops nearly every list is trucking and logistics. This one I was well aware of before researching. Anyone who drives a car on the interstate is equally aware. Truck drivers rely on tie-down straps to keep cargo in place.
I’ve seen truckers using ratchet straps for light and moderate loads. I’ve seen them using winch straps for heavier loads. I have even seen truckers combine winch straps and chains on rare occasions. As for other commercial applications, I uncovered some intriguing possibilities:
- Industrial Equipment – Tie-down straps are indispensable when moving industrial equipment. Imagine a company shipping new tool and die machines to a shop in another state. You can bet those machines will be tied down with winch straps.
- Moving and Storage – I never thought of it, but professional movers make use of tie-down straps even though they normally rely on box trucks and enclosed trailers to do what they do. Cam buckle, ratchet, and E-track straps are commonplace in the moving industry.
- Construction – Some construction trades rely on tie-down straps to create a safer and more efficient job site. For example, tie-down straps are often used to lift roof trusses into place.
My research also uncovered a number of military operations for which tie-down straps are appropriate. One might consider such applications commercial, so I thought I would mention them here.
2. Noncommercial Applications
I suspect most of us will be more familiar with noncommercial applications. For example, I am fairly well acquainted with utilizing tie-down straps for my own personal moving needs. I have secured furniture to the back of a pickup truck on more than one occasion. However, I have never attempted to move a mattress on the roof of my car.
Other noncommercial applications include:
- Recreational Vehicles – Tie-down straps coming handy for securing recreational vehicles like dirt bikes and ATVs. They are also great to have on hand if you drive an RV or haul a travel trailer.
- Boating – Sturdy tie-down straps or a great option for securing a boat to a trailer. Likewise for transporting kayaks and canoes on trailers or in trucks.
- Automotive – Four ratchet straps with hooks on the ends or ideal for securing a car on the back of a trailer. Those same straps would also work well for hauling motorcycles and small utility vehicles.
- Overlanding – Overlanders might be the biggest adopters of tie-down straps in the noncommercial space. They use them for everything from securing their tents to keeping their propane tanks properly secured.
Of course, there are tons of home uses that have nothing to do with securing cargo. I have used them to hang things on the walls of my garage. I have used tie-down straps as makeshift laundry lines, to keep my garden hoses gathered up, and to keep my grill from blowing away in bad storms. Tie-down straps are just that versatile.
